On the Town: Prancercise with me!

Posted by Kyle Thomas Hemingway on May 30, 2013 8:00:00 AM | 0 comments | On the Town

After last week's incredibly amazing (yet inevitably physically taxing) Opus Affair Fifth Birthday festivities, you're probably looking for a fun and easy way to work off all those extra cocktail calories you inhaled. Now, if you're like me, and traditional exercise leaves you wanting more [chocolate cake], I can confidently say I have the solution for you. While you're out #OnTheTown, why not Prancercise your way to the theater or concert hall? I invite you to do just that with me with this weekend's picks! Since I've been inadvertently Prancercising since I exited the womb, I would consider myself an expert in the field and will be sprinkling this weekend's picks with some Prancing Pro Tips. So get your ankle weights on, tease out your perm, button your sweater set as high as it can go, and let's get moving!

An unspeakable tragedy occurred today. A giant inflatable rubber duck was found deflated under mysterious circumstances yesterday morning in Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour. WHY WOULD ANYONE DO THIS? Why would anyone rob the world of the pure, unadulterated joy of a giant inflatable rubber duck? To cope with the deflated spirits that undoubtedly accompany the deflated duck, please allow me to present to you three fabulously joyous events happening #OnTheTown in Boston this weekend!

On the Town: Nothing Succeeds Like Excess

The Dowager Countess of Grantham said it best, "Nothing succeeds like excess." This upcoming weekend is certainly bound to be one full of excess—Baz Luhrmann's long-awaited film adaptation of The Great Gatsby hits theaters on Friday, and it seems as though the city has gotten in the spirit with a slew of opulent and over-the-top arts events! So grab a couple bottles of Monica and Chandler and let's get this weekend started. Thanks, champagne!

On the Town: Rock that [May] pole

Posted by Kyle Thomas Hemingway on May 2, 2013 8:00:00 AM | 0 comments | On the Town

Ah, it's that time again. Exactly six months after Halloween, it's finally Walpurgisnacht. This festive spring holiday is traditionally celebrated with fire dancing and pole dancing—that is, prancing around giant bonfires and wrapping colorful ribbons around a maypole. This celebration is a common theme throughout the arts, and what better way to ring in spring than by taking Walpurgisnacht #OnTheTown?!

CHROMA @ BOSTON BALLET

Choreographer Leonid Lavrovsky conceived a ballet called Walpurgisnacht for the Bolshoi Theatre. Speaking of ballet, our own resident dancers, the Boston Ballet, open one of their final programs of the season this weekend with Chroma, pairing two classic Balanchine ballets with a 2006 piece by Wayne McGregor set to the music of The White Stripes. I am personally very much looking forward to the anachronous pairing and how the choreographers' styles work with on another.

Chroma: At the Boston Opera House; 539 Washington Street, Boston; bostonballet.org. Through May 12. @bostonballet
