On the Town: Just some Hocus Pocus

Posted by Kyle Thomas Hemingway on Oct 31, 2013 8:00:00 AM | 0 comments | On the Town

Boys and ghouls, it's a very special time of year. No, not the World Series (although, depending on who you talk to, that's important too). It's Halloween! This year, however, it's not just any Halloween. This year is the 20th anniversary of the modern Halloween classic film, Hocus Pocus! From box office flop to cult classic, this film has touched countless lives over its two-decade existence. Let's honor the fine legacy of sisters Winnie, Sarah, and Mary by celebrating #OnTheTown with some #BostonArts!

On the Town: Royal Baptism Edition

Posted by Kyle Thomas Hemingway on Oct 24, 2013 8:00:00 AM | 0 comments | On the Town

Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge was baptized this week at the chapel at St. James Palace. Displaying amazingly chubby cheeks and a train to rival that of Princess Di, little George became an official member of the C of E and continues to make headlines wherever he goes. His seven godparents were in attendance (yes, seven), and afterwards there was a tea where christening cake was served (the top tier of William and Catherine's wedding cake from 2011--not okay). Why don't you take a moment to celebrate this momentous occasion #OnTheTown with some #BostonArts (and, hopefully, less stale cake)!

On the Town: Here she is, world!

Brush up on your substitutiary locomotion and grab your bosom buddy. This week was the inimitable Angela Lansbury's birthday! How old did she turn, you might ask? Well, we never ask a lady her age, but I'd estimate that it's "somewhere between 40 and death." Let's celebrate the birth of this Commander of the British Empire #OnTheTown with her favorite thing—live entertainment!

WAGNER, MOZART, AND BRAHMS @ BOSTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Dreamboat of talent Andris Nelsons leads his first BSO subscription series concert since being named music director designate, and it's certainly a doozy of a program! Some casual Wagner, a Brahms symphony, and a Mozart piano concerto he'll get an assist on from pianist Paul Lewis. You don't need to be Jessica Fletcher to know this is a concert not to miss!

Wagner, Mozart, and Brahms: Conducted by Andris Nelsons; Paul Lewis, piano At Symphony Hall; 301 Massachusetts Avenue, Boston; bso.org. Through October 19. @bostonsymphony

On The Town: Shut Down

Posted by Kyle Thomas Hemingway on Oct 11, 2013 8:00:00 AM | 0 comments | On the Town

Well, the government shut down this week. Something about healthcare. The last time this happened, Bill Clinton met Monica Lewinsky and Hootie and the Blowfish were in the Top 40. I know, I'm just as terrified as you are. Luckily, there's something you can do. You might be locked out of monuments, national parks, and space exploration, but you're certainly not locked out of any theaters or museums in Boston! Let's take a quick jaunt #OnTheTown this weekend before communism takes over officially and we're forced to start using the metric system!

On the Town: There's still more duck

Posted by Kyle Thomas Hemingway on Oct 11, 2013 8:00:00 AM | 0 comments | On the Town

Last year, while I was on vacation in Paris with my husband-then-boyfriend, we had the fanciest meal I've ever had—for lunch. There was course after course after course. Then, the duck came. We ate the duck and discussed whether to move onto cheese or straight to dessert. Then, a curious thing happened. More duck appeared. This was one of the most welcome surprises of my life. Surprise duck.
