Opus Affair July "Musings"

Posted by Carolyn Macleod on Jul 16, 2020 12:18:01 PM | 0 comments | Boston, Calendar

The last show I saw was on March 6, 2020. Strangely, I think about intermission the most. I remember washing my hands, willing intermission to drag a little longer so I could wash my hands for the CDC recommended time before returning to my seat, where I’d sit elbow to elbow with the rest of the audience. After that, I let myself be whisked away by the show, coronavirus didn’t exist in the world of the show and no longer mattered to me. That memory doesn’t feel like four months ago – it feels like an alternate reality. I couldn’t fathom the idea that the show would never get an opening night, that theatre would be empty in a few weeks, everyone on stage and behind it out of work. And here we are.

It’s my first time: Sensitive conversations about buying art and starting your collection

Posted by Carolyn Macleod on Jul 6, 2018 11:10:41 AM | 0 comments | Interviews

Buying your first piece of original art can be intimidating. It’s a big commitment and can be a big moment of self-examination. Plus, the art world is a complex (and multi-billion dollar) industry. However, you don’t need to be buying and trading Picassos and Monets to be an “art collector.” All you need is space in your home and your heart for a piece and all the stories, joy, and pride at supporting an artist in their business that comes with it.

Leaving at Intermission: Don't Do It

Posted by Carolyn Macleod on May 7, 2018 3:38:54 PM | 0 comments | Miscellaneous

If I had a dollar for every time I heard a haughtily delivered, “I left at intermission,” I could afford some sort of treatment for the strain caused by all of the eye-rolling at that lame dig.

I get it—sometimes you realize early on that this is 100% not your thing. Not everything is for everyone and honestly, not everything is good. However, most things deserve a fair shake and bragging about leaving at intermission undermines the artist’s work and paints you as a destructive audience member. Leaving at intermission actually does more harm than good—not just for the artist, but also yourself.

You want Instagram likes? Get thee to an art museum, stat.

In case you haven’t heard, museums and galleries are the hottest spots to get your next profile picture. There is no better way to get photographic evidence of both your refined tastes and shapely buttocks than by having someone behind you take your photo while you stare pensively at a large canvas.

Meet the September PBFund Nominees

Posted by Carolyn Macleod on Sep 19, 2014 5:53:00 AM | 0 comments | Punch Bowl Fund

September's Punch Bowl is all about giving people and organizations we already love a bit more star attention. Not only will we be treated to more of Kyle's handsome mug in his new role as Boston Opus Affair Host-extrordinaire, we're introducing three "new" nominee organizations. Speakeasy Stage, the Actor's Shakespeare Project, and GrubStreet have NEVER been featured before, which is frankly shocking because they're each so fabulous. We're excited to welcome them to the club. So come by and see these new faces, and the same old usual ones (you know who you are). Old or new, we're a pretty good looking bunch (check out the pictures Diana takes, if you're in any doubt). Who are you going to vote for?

Meet the August PBFund Nominees

Posted by Carolyn Macleod on Aug 21, 2014 7:27:00 AM | 1 comment | Punch Bowl Fund

August's Punch Bowl Fund brings us all a little closer to the end of the summer, but it also brings us back to one of our favorite bars, Belly. We'll be trying out the new way of running the PBFund. For those of you that missed the trial run last month at Grill 23, everyone who attends gets a vote when they check in (RSVP'ing makes this speedy process extra speedy). There will still be Punch, plus a few other selections whose purchase contributes to the Fund, but all money goes through the bar. This month we're putting head to head three organizations trying new approaches to getting Boston talking about and experiencing art and music.
