Alright kids. The divas of Christmas Past and Christmas Present have made their visits. This week, I was planning on bringing you the Diva of Christmas Yet to Come, however according to the Mayans (and R.E.M.), there are no more Christmases yet to come. Therefore, in lieu of such a post, I'm going to give you #OnTheTown: It's the end of the world as we know it.

Tweet me (while you still can) at @khemingway with some end of the world preparedness advice—Lord knows I could use some!

AFTER HOURS: WORD PLAY @ ISABELLA STEWART GARDNER MUSEUM

What would the end of the world be without one more After Hours at the Gardner Museum? This month, the Gardner is partnering with Grub Street for an evening focused on words as a nod to Mrs. Gardner's love of rare books. There will be bookbinding activities, flash poems (not as dirty as it sounds!), and and even Mad Libs with real letters composed by Mrs. Gardner! Topping off this fabulous evening is a performance by the Boston Typewriter Orchestra!

After Hours: Word Play: At the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum; 280 The Fenway, Boston; isgm.org. December 20 only. @gardnermuseum

ART IN THE STREET: EUROPEAN POSTERS @ MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS, BOSTON

Signage will probably not be very important as burning hail rains down on civilization, but it's one of my favorite things. The turn of the 19th century brought art out of the galleries and onto the streets as the international poster movement took the world by storm, and that storm has never ceased (but likely will end on Friday). The MFA has put together a fabulous exhibit of about 40 posters highlighting the genesis and rise of this art form with notable examples from such names as Toulouse-Lautrec and Kandinsky!

Art in the Street: European Posters: At the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; 465 Huntington Avenue, Boston; mfa.org. Through July 21, 2013. @mfaboston

THE WINTER BALL @ PARK PLAZA, BOSTON

When an alien race finds our world decimated by the fulfillment of this Mayan prophecy, you don't want them to find your charred remains wearing sweatpants and Ugg boots, do you?! Don a ballgown or tux and go out with style at The Winter Ball! One of Boston's oldest society traditions, The Winter Ball is an annual formal affair where fancy ladies and their gentlemen escorts ballroom dance the night away. This year, the event's proceeds will benefit Discovery Ensemble (although what they'll do with the money when we're all dead and gone is a mystery to me).

The Winter Ball: Presented by Margaret Howell Associates and Opus Affair. At the Boston Park Plaza Hotel; 50 Park Plaza, Boston; facebook.com/thewinterball. December 21 only. #winterball
